[av_textblock size=” font_color=” color=” av-medium-font-size=” av-small-font-size=” av-mini-font-size=” admin_preview_bg=”] Felix Cartal creates feel-good, entertaining music. Not the standard Pop-Electro sound you will find in most cases when it comes to easy-going mainstream appeal, but the more heartfelt, catchy atmosphere you know from his popular remake “Get What You Want”.
The updated cover of the New Radicals’ classic single from 1998, gathered Felix Cartal sales, airplay and a positive vibe around his new album “Next Season”. Diving into this LP, the listener will discover that the popular single is just the surface of one of the most entertaining radio-friendly releases of 2018.
“Drifting Away” is maybe the best song in order to describe “Next Season”‘s overall sound landscape. Strong female singers, some good melodic EDM bass and a wonderful summer vibe that will stick in the listener’s head for quite a few weeks.
The project relies on a variety of instruments and crisp beats. From the minor toned “Everything is Fine” and the strong and pompous “Wherever”, you’re instantly transferred into an acoustic guitar driven song like “Down For You”. Of course, that does not mean that “Next Season” should be labeled as an experimental work, it’s far from being characterized with this kind of sentences since Cartal chose to keep it safe while focusing on the well-known aesthetics of the EDM scene in general. He succeeded though in giving to almost every track his own style and identity, by combining his work ethic and talent, with the familiar sounds that populate the radio and the internet all over the world.
Felix Cartal did an excellent job in picking up good vocalists, almost every artist here delivers, even in cases in which the hook may sound a little bit cheesy or lukewarm (“Mood”). Lyrics are kept simple throughout the album in order to flow nicely with the overall airy, dreamy and Pop-oriented music style and that’s probably a good thing. Listeners should focus mainly on Cartal’s clear productions and on the vocal skills of talented artists like Ofelia K, Veronica, Coer De Pirate and more.
“Next Season” expresses in almost every song with its overall artistic direction, by applying clear lyrical messages, which might be for some listeners too easy or Poppy for an 18-track long LP. Maybe that’s the album’s only real downside. This LP would be easier to enjoy from start to finish, if it was kept more compact, by removing four or five songs that may feel weaker compared to the standout singles or maybe a little bit out of place.
On the other hand, Felix Cartal wanted to release something that would project his versatile beat-making style and his skills when it comes to creating music for the masses, but in a good way. It’s a fun and very entertaining EDM record that tends on recreating the Pop-Mainstream sound we would like to listen on the radio. Yes, Felix Cartal could experiment a little bit more or try a few new things here and there, but if you want a pleasing soundtrack for summer 2018 that will follow you throughout your upcoming vacations, there is probably no better option then streaming this project and its standout songs on every possible streaming service available. You shouldn’t wait for “Next Season” to enjoy this one, you better start picking your favorite tunes right now.
