As one of the Ambassadors of Freedom 2018 (NL) Fedde Le Grand has been given the opportunity to help shed some light on the underexposed Indonesian War Of Independence. “It’s been a very humbling experience and I’m thankful for the time Paatje Phefferkorn and Wim Manuhutu shared with me to help me learn to understand. Theirs are amongst stories that we need to remember to truly understand, freedom should not be taken for granted”, he says.
Every May 5th, Liberation Day is celebrated in The Netherlands to mark the end of the occupation by Nazi Germany during World War II. Each year a few Ambassadors of Freedom are appointed to help raise awareness that freedom is a hard fought privilege.
“Paatje Phefferkorn is the founder of the gym – and teacher of my teacher – where I practice Pencak Silat, a traditional Indonesian martial arts form, and one of the very few survivors of the Indonesian War Of Indepence still alive today. He’s been a tremendous support to the community in the Netherlands. It’s been a special discovery to find this connection close to home and a very humbling experience to learn a little more about his life and hardships. The thing that stuck to me the most is his positive outlook on life, he refused to turn bitter and let his life experiences get the better of him, instead he learned, grew and possibly got better through them. To me that is so inspirational and really a lesson to us all“, Fedde Le Grand mentions.
On May 5th Fedde Le Grand will be flown through the country, performing at five of the Freedom Festivals to celebrate our privileges living in a free country. If you’re in Holland he hopes to see you at one of them and raise your glass to freedom.
